I’ve realized that when it comes to growing my team, Im having trouble knowing exactly how to explain “what I do” as a coach. Its hard to know where to start… but because my ultimate goal is to onboard incredible people who blossom into phenomenal leaders, I guess I better work on that. So here’s my attempt at shedding some light and gaining clarity on how it began, why it all started, and where Im headed…
I graduated DePauw University with a Kinesiology major (health and exercise science) and was a little different than most of my class. Most Kines majors wanted to be the first on the scene athletic trainers, but I could barely stomach a broken bone on television, let a lone in person. Many in my class were wanting to be physical therapists, doctors, and physicians assistants. To me, that was A LOT OF WORK that I wasn’t even 50-50 on, so that made no sense. All I knew was I loved studying nutrition, the metabolism, and I spent all my time in the gym working out because I felt at home and it made me happy.
Somewhere along my journey in college, because I no longer was playing sports due to three knee surgeries, I realized I needed to change it up. It was then that I discovered group exercise, which led to summers at the Fishers YMCA that changed my life. It only took a crazy spin class and a rock star Turbo instructor to make me realize OH MY GOSH I WANT TO DO THIS. I loved the energy in the class, but also always found myself in front, wanting to be as close to the instructor as possible, and most always within view of a mirror. After realizing my goal was to bring group exercise classes like Turbo Kick to my college, I started to follow around my now coach, leader, mentor and dear friend Julie Voris. She’s a big deal, to say the least, even 8 years ago people were elbowing each other to get into her class. All I knew was I wanted to get certified in Turbo, bring it to DePauw, and try to do whatever Julie was doing because it made her seem really cool.
What I didnt realize she was exuding, that I craved, but definitely know now… was confidence and leadership. She was helping lead classrooms full of people – making that hour the best part of their day, helping them escape from their stress, creating a launching pad to be better friends, mothers, fathers, employees, bosses, CEOS, nurses, doctors, cops, what have you! After getting to know her I realized it was a lot more than being a rockstar in front of a group of people. The music was crazy, the workout was epic, and Julie was always a fearless leader.. so of course that made it appealing, but her WHY made ME cry, but more importantly it was something I saw in myself…
Fast forward a year, after I had achieved my bucket list of getting turbo certified and started teaching at DPU, I also gained the confidence to lead a cycling team in college for our version of Little 5, so I guess you could say I was getting experience as an instructor, leader, and coach. When Julie continued to connect with me, which I loved because she’s awesome, she eventually asked me to join this new thing called “Beach Body Coaching”. I had just graduated college, didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do with my life, but had landed an awesome sales opportunity at Angie’s List, and figured “well if I can sell a few Turbo Fire DVDS and gloves, than that would be awesome… but I don’t know about this Shakeology thing nor am I interested in doing DVDS at home…”. Honestly, I just wanted to be close to Julie and learn from her as an instructor. Around this time, I also began teaching at the YMCA downtown because an instructor saw my eager eyes and solid cycling form, and mentored me to begin instructing there. Kate Warpool showed me the ropes, welcomed me into the best community downtown, and the rest is history. Ive now been teaching formats at the downtown Y for 7 years and honestly can never see myself leaving.
Now being an instructor is MUCH different than being an instructor AND a coach. I knew that I could do more with this instructing/fitness thing because I LOVED IT. Loved helping people, loved helping people see the potential in themselves, and loved created a launching pad for others to be their best selves. I then finally started to do research, believe in myself, and get organized and motivated enough to shed 40 lbs. After losing this weight, I knew a part of me wanted to help others do the same but I just didnt know exactly how. After mastering portion control and a love for veggies, I finally stopped ignoring all the other coach’s posts about Shakeology. I finally took the time to do research because Julie never stopped talking about it. Two-three years after she had first introduced me to the business, I realized shes still drinking Shakeology, she looks INCREDIBLE, and has energy for days. Ill be honest, I was a snob. I thought it was just another version of slim fast or a quick fix or the latest trend. When I investigated how many nutrients were in this “daily dose” as well as where they come from, I was floored. I thought to myself… “WOW no wonder its not the cheapest thing in the world. I better give this a try…”
Im SO glad I did. After trying Shakeology I was SOLD. I never craved more clean foods in my life. Fruits and vegetables never tasted so good. The chocolate Shakeology made my body wake up with natural energy, my muscles recovered, and I RARELY get sick. It helps me go go go and stay away from processed junk. Every day I have Shakeology, I make better health choices, and thats NOT a coincidence. Its proven that these nutrients, minerals, grams of protein, and the rest of the ingredients are on PURPOSE. After not only losing weight, but realizing how healthy one could eat, I realized I wanted to help others not only have an awesome exercise routine, I wanted to help them transform their life in a way that I did when I finally took accountability for my decisions and implemented a plan. I wanted to help people see their light shine through, and give them the tools to make it so! And alas, “Like the Lettuce” Health and Fitness was born.
I can honestly say that beach body coaching has given me an endless array of tools to help people with. Sure I majored in health and exercise science, but Im NOT a nutritionist, Im NOT a personal trainer, as much as I love Julie Voris, Im NOT her, but Im me! And I love to help people…I love to help people with what Im good at. And that just so happens to be 1) awesome exercise solutions that tend to make us really happy afterwards and 2) believing in yourself enough to implement a health and exercise program that you can stick to to get results.
Now that I’ve been coaching for several years all over the country (live in class AND virtually online), actively helping people shed stubborn fat and finally believe in themselves, Im now GROWING LEADERS. Im now helping people transition from the one who needed all the help, to also helping others. Being a coach has been the most motivating accountability tool in the world. Wanting to walk your walk because its what you help others with is priceless. Ive been successful at growing a community of people who lean on eachother, and helping my coaches do the same is just like the feeling of leading a rocking fitness class. People need people, and Im doing a disservice if I dont continue to find people who want to do that and help them with the lessons, tricks, tips, and tools that have worked for me! Did I mention they’re all good friends? Did I mention they motivate me to be the strongest and best version of myself? DId I mention they get me and I get them?
Many of you may or may not be interested in the financial gain as well. Cleary I got into this NOT FOR THE MONEY, but Ill be honest in that its been a huge reason why I’ve continued to pursue this path. I feel confident I would be wanting to help others with health, fitness, and happiness in some way, but this opportunity has the biggest financial imprint, which means freedom to me, and Im all about that and giving back. This past year I made nearly $30,000 in this business alone. Mind you I have a full time job… so this “side job/part time business” sure doesnt hurt. My goal is to of course grow my business, which means the financial opportunity as well. The beauty of this business is that you literally have to help others succeed in order to increase your paycheck… and Im a fan of any business model that empowers people, rewarding them for helping others!
Needless to say #TEAMLETTUCE is my community, my group of friends, my fitness family and my world. Seeing them blossom into successful leaders, instructors, coaches and just plain role models, mentors, and awesome people is officially my mission. I love helping others, but I can only go so far. I can only relate to so many people. By coaching coaches, the ripple effect is ongoing and never stopping. I share this with you because if you’re still reading this article, than maybe you can relate to me…and if not me, one of my coaches. And in case you’re thinking you have to be an instructor, or have to have a background in health and fitness, YOU’RE WRONG. Thats just MY story. My coaches are hair stylists, ad sales, nurses, athletic trainers, stay at home moms, you name it! Whats important is do you have a strong desire to help others with health, fitness, happiness, belief in oneself and the opportunity to even be your own boss!? Now if thats the case, WHATEVER YOUR BACKGROUND… than Id LOVE to talk.
Our team runs monthly backstage passes where we shed light on whats all involved in being a coach. We talk about the programs we help people with and we also just show what works for us. Theres no secrets here, no smoke and mirrors, because we’re looking for something special… and its up to you to let us know if YOU can see yourself doing what we do.
So I invite you to join! Consider helping someone press play on their life… considering the impact you can have on the world…. realize what you can do for your own future and your own happiness. My coaches and myself all have before and afters. Many are physical, but beyond that, they are financial, mental, and spiritual. The tools are LEGIT, its up to us to share them. The next backstage pass is towards the end of April and runs for 5 days, virtually, all online. All you have to do is absorb, ask questions, and see if this would be the right fit for you!
