Hey, hey lettuce-heads!
Oh holiday season. How magical it all really is. Theres something about the shorter days, colder weather, yummy scents, pretty decor and overall snuggly feeling of getting together with family that just well feels…nice. I get the best sleep of my life in this type of season BUT my sweet tooth also goes to an all time high. If you’re anything like me, all the warm and fuzzy perks of the holidays tend to take away from almost everything I prioritize on my health and fitness journey- especially if you have a soft spot for holiday desserts. However, Ive found that the days I feel most at peace and comfortable with my decisions, my day’s actions, and whatever it says on the scale, aren’t the days where I burned the most calories, or ate the least, they can even be the days I did indeed have a rich dessert and burned half the calories I normally do. It didn’t hit home just what the difference was… until recently, but when it did, I knew I HAD TO SHARE.
So whats involved in this equation that keeps me at peace?
Sweating with soul… and eating with intention. When I worked out with my good friend Erin in Dallas at our Platinum Edge conference, we went through a workout where we were completely in tune with the music, the movement, ourselves and Brett Hoebel (rev abs, biggest loser, capoeira master) preached the importance of sweating with soul. It hit home that every workout Ive ever done where Ive felt connected…inside of myself while completely escaped from my normal thoughts, were the workouts in which I sweated with soul. I truly feel its part of why I prefer teaching, Ive got a big fat burning purpose behind every class and Im right there in the journey with them. Busting my butt, oblivious of anything but the moment, and grooving with the crazy music. If Im not in a rhythm with the music, with myself, with the moves, I just dont feel the same.
All of the formats I teach tend to go along with music, and if it doesnt, I make sure it does because the synchronicity of this technique makes all the difference. I highly suggest, in order to enjoy motivating and fulfilling workouts, search for or create options that completely transport you to another place (inside or outside yourself) where you are feeling your most alive, most strong, and most capable self. The more in the moment you are (or if possible the whole time) the more you will reap meditative type rewards. The workouts in which I sweat with soul…are always the best.
Eating with intention can be looked at the very same way. Nothings worse than mindless eating. Whether thats looking down at your plate and wondering who the heck ate your food because you were too busy multitasking, or eating something that served no purpose, didnt taste good at all, and something you could have absolutely done without. The days where each morsel that goes into my mouth was enjoyed but also proved a nutritional purpose are the best. Normally these days I abide to a plan and eat when Im hungry. Every meal is based on a nutritional need, but I dont eat until Im hungry- and hunger is the best sauce. The times where Im only eating because Im bored, procrastinating, need sleep instead or am escaping emotionally, give me the worst feelings. I know I can find healthier options and this is always as a result of something else going on in my life- and in which case, it happens.
However, if we can set a plan for ourselves of our meals having nutritional purpose while tasting delightful (because whats the fun behind tasteless food?) than you may have found a sure fire way of eating with intention. Slowing down, making a plan, being grateful for what you have (so enough is plenty, and you dont need MORE, MORE, MORE or experience FOMO- fear of missing out), and enjoying each bite until you’re full will be a game changer. You just have to consciously tell yourself… slow down, eat with intention… it definitely works for me- I just have to remember. I recommend writing it somewhere (phone case, schedule, plates, fridge, etc)- try it for 30 days, then 60- and see where the scale ends up.
Id love to hear how this works for you! Please comment below on tips that help you sweat with soul and eat with intention or share with those you care!
