Despite it being almost half way through the summer, with many of our vacations already being under weigh, maybe half the weddings already attended, and you’ve been to your share of attempted rain-checked barbecues… you might scratch your head and wonder what there’s to look forward to? Maybe you’re a physical goal setter and think about sick abs and lean legs, you could be one of the many athletes planning their next grueling race, or its possible you join the adventurers in googling your next mountain, water, tropical or European get a way. Am I here to tell you to stop that? Heck no, in fact I encourage it.
I’m all for us living our lives, experiencing NEW bucket list items, and setting goals. I know it keeps us going and we’re creatures who flourish in movement. The only hold up I find in my field of health and fitness, and probably all others (business, lifestyle, beauty), is that people think that once they arrive at a certain destination, the happiness just fills in the gaps and all is good and well, along with the unicorns and rainbows and magical prince charmings’ that we find at this same la la land.
To avoid this misconception and delusional way of thinking, I wanted to examine why I love setting goals and helping others set their own. Many people challenge themselves, but theres a difference between those that flourish with challenge and those that shrink in the face of it. Im here to relay that the happiest goal setters Ive found are those that understand their goal, at which they may or may not arrive, is not a destination at all, but merely a carrot to keep them moving in their path of happiness. They know love, happiness, and peace is a lifestyle, a point of view, a choice, but setting the goals, carrots, and bucket list items are in attempts to savor the rewards for keeping on that path. In order to feel the true satisfaction of their reward, they know they have to work for it.
So when happiness is far from the easiest choice, in fact its DIFFICULT, sometimes feels impossible, they push forward because they know how sweet the payoff is when they continue on their path versus veering off. The day to day grind, the nipping of procrastination, the extra hours, the extra sweat, the tears, the pick yourself up and go again… These hard times dont phase the goal setters, because they’ve got a carrot in the near future, around the corner, keeping them going. When its tough to see the BIG picture, theyve got a little peace of heaven to work towards. When it gets a little blurry…their goals and rewards keep them focused. This approach helps people go from asking themselves “who cares?” to “why stop?”
I say continue to set your goals, weight loss, marathons, tropical get aways, monthly bonuses, money saved, quality time with family, etc. Goals keep our eyes on the prize…focused on whats important… the choice, the lifestyle, the concentrated effort of peace in our minds, hearts, and souls thats already been there all along, and instead of veering off, we must set the types of goals that help us stay there.
