I was honored when Hilary from Dean Street Society asked me to be a part of the “Happy Hour Blog Tour” to start the conversation about her new book “The 4-Part Entrepreneur Cocktail”. I was introduced to Hilary through Marie Forleo’s B-School: an online business and marketing school for entrepreneurs. Through this program I’ve been inspired by fellow brilliant, beautiful babes who are not only business minded, but also have blogs themselves. Its been a perfect community for me to learn from and I urge you to follow Marie Forleo as soon as you possibly can! Shes been life changing for me and my business- confirming something I already felt deep inside…. that everyone, including myself, has a specific and unique gift that they MUST share with the world.
Hilary wanted us to touch on topics to help new entrepreneurs and bloggers face their fears, begin their process, START, or just plain grow their confidence as they go. I loved the idea of helping people just starting out because it wasn’t all that long ago that I began blogging and taking my business seriously. I consider 3 years ago as the official birthday of “Like the Lettuce” Health and Fitness. It honestly began the day I decided to take myself seriously after my boyfriend asked me “What would you do if you could do anything!?” and after I answered, he asked me “What are you doing right now to get closer to that goal?” I realized I needed to start then and there with SOMETHING each day in order to get this ball rolling. So its 3 years later, and Im pretty dang proud of where Im at today. Im not going to claim I make 10k a month nor can I claim that the path Ive pursued has been the easiest, but I can tell you that because I’ve decided to pursue my passions of helping others unleash their deepest desires, starting with a healthy lifestyle… I’ve finally started LIVING. The more Ive put myself out there, the closer and closer I’ve felt to my community, and the rest of the world. I sincerely cant wait to wake up each morning and do one or five things that fulfill my passions and purpose. It can be difficult putting yourself out there, promoting your business, your blog posts, your mission, your message. However, Ive found that anything I become vulnerable about and share is beyond warmly received, encouraged, supported and “you go girl”ed! The more real I am, the more authentic, the more me I unleash… the better my blog posts, the better my business does, and the more I get to spread my mission and message.
While its been incredible so far, people often wonder if a lifestyle of many hats, a booked calendar, and a jampacked inbox is something they’d ever want. Maybe its not and thats totally cool- you gotta rock YOU and you’ve got to be realistic if thats something you want! But if you like a variety of random things, have a HUGE HEART, and people keep coming to you for help…and performing these various services lights your life on fire then you may be on to something. I say follow that fire step by step. However, more often than not many of us never take off with what we really want to do because we dont know where to start. Im here to tell you, you’ll figure it out, little by little, as you go…but if you continue to wait until you “know”, you’ll be waiting forever. I read recently that the only certainty is uncertainty… and that every time we make a decision there will be a little voice in our head doubting that very decision. Activity breeds activity and if we dont get movin’ those voices become louder and louder. Everytime I move from procrastinating to DOING Im instantly relieved, and while I have no idea what will happen because of my deciding to act, its always a worthwhile opportunity that wouldnt have happened if I stayed stuck.
I didnt always do everything I do now, it all began with a single step, as they say. I still remember teaching my first class at DePauw University, and I still remember pressing “publish” on my first blog. The truth is Ive always been busy! Most people are… I just now am busy with the things that matter most to me. Want to know what I include in my “tail feather”, “wheel house”, “umbrella”? Well it almost all falls under “Like the Lettuce Health and Fitness? I dont really tell everyone what I DONT do. Like hating housework, never really cooking, barely doing my hair or wearing makeup… I just dont care to spend a lot of time doing those things. I ask for help or reserve it for special occasions. I only hang out with people who lift me up, often meeting new people for lunches and wine dates, with the rest of the time reserved for people who truly truly know me.I have virtually no desire in a variety of other things other people do- and thats fine! Often I remind myself that when I feel like Im missing out or am deprived, I look in the mirror and say “what would you do if you could do anything!?” and more often than not its absolutely what Im already doing… so I cannot compare what I love to do to what others love to do. I have to remember at the end of the day, Im in charge of my calendar.
Heres my synopsis of my weekly schedule: I teach 5-7 fitness classes a week, write my blog each week, write my newsletter each week, do my own social media marketing, run health challenge groups every month, coach my team to run their own health and fitness businesses, participate in a variety of charities and ambassadorships, and work 40 hours as an e-commerce consultant at Angie’s List. Do I need to do this all? No… Do I make money off of every single thing I do? Heck no… Why do I do it? Because I frickin’ feel alive and its what I WANT TO DO or if its somewhat painful or boring, you better believe its helping me get closer to an important goal of mine. The things I listed are all activities Ive chosen to include. Trust me, Ive tried other things, and well if I dont like doing them… they dont last. Everytime I add something new, I know I have to sacrifice something else to do it. This lifestyle forces me to truly evaluate what to say yes to.
With my skills, passion, and success so far, many scratch their head as to why I STILL have a desk job. Well the truth is, Im good at that too and theres a reason Im there. As much as I love health, fitness, & self love, I also love marketing, advertising, sales, business, as well as the ability to work hard and be rewarded economically for it. I love having coworkers, and even actually enjoy sitting at a desk where my computer is at my fingertips. But whats currently most valuable from my desk job is the freedom to pay for additional training, certifications, conferences, websites, stability, HELP, relaxation, independence, and freedom. Fortunately everything I do now applies to having and growing my health and fitness business, so I know in my heart of hearts, everything I currently do is thoroughly bringing me joy and further develops me to be a better health and fitness entrepreneuer. Sometimes it doesnt feel like it, because it can be mundane, boring, challenging, scary, testing… but thanks to people around me who I love and trust, as well as my blog (ie online diary), I get to reflect on my life, bounce things back and forth, and for that Im consistently making space for gratitude, which helps me understand what I really need & want… and what I really dont.
People will worry about me, and theres definitely times where I worry about myself. Prepare for that, thats normal! But when I have faith and trust in the Universe, realizing that Ive done this well so far, surround myself with an incredible support system, say no to the things that dont feel right and yes to the things that do, I know Im doing just fine. I refuse to feel overwhelmed, well because that doesnt get me anywhere. Recently I was at a conference in which they compared their life to spinning different plates all at the same time. You have to pick and choose your plates, and keep them all spinning…or one, or ALL, will most stop spinning and crash to the ground. Or another wonderful metaphor was being the driver in your car, with your priorities in your car with you. If you ever look behind and something falls into the rear view mirror, possibly losing something important as you continue to drive forward, you stop your car, reverse, and pick it back up. Theres never a time where I dont remember Im in charge and I feel incredibly empowered to not only remind myself of that but to help others realize that too.
I have big goals but I also change my mind. I do a lot, but theres also days I dont want to get out of bed right away or hit the gym. All in all, I seriously love everything I do… and thats why nothing truly is overwhelming. As soon as it starts to feel that way, I realize somethings off. Somethings in my tailfeather, wheelhouse or under my umbrella that just doesnt serve me anymore. If Im not smiling, jumping out of bed, and feeling alive 90% of the time, somethings gotta give and Ive always been good at adjusting whats on my calendar and in my to do list. Most often when Im feeling run down, Im lacking a good nights sleep, a night out with girlfriends, or a lounge in my PJs night in. My advice? Remember that youre in charge! Delegate, outsource, or just plain cut out the shiz that doesnt serve you, when you rest REALLY REST. If you’re just starting out…focus on doing what you LOVE and continuously explore what things you enjoy that also brings in streams of revenue. Or better yet, explore Marie Forleo and other business advice that helps YOU figure out a way to make money doing what you love. Hilary Rushford is doing something similar with her new book- giving business newbies advice she wish she had starting out.
As you grow in skill and exposure, people will pay you for what you’re passionate about, have a unique and strong skill set in, and as that grows, people will pay you more. Pursue what you love, and assess what feels overwhelming as you go. Ask yourself why, ask yourself whats not serving you, constantly reflect, and do what you love. Remember: Youre in charge!
Thank you so much for listening to my advice on avoiding “overwhelm” and saying YES TO YOU instead.
